MID-CENTURY MODERN PROJECT DETAILS

The goal of this project was to update and remodel the home, while staying true to its 1950s beginnings. To achieve this, the bones of the home were kept largely the same. New wood floors were matched to the existing, and the original floors were refinished to make them look new. Grasscloth originally lined the front hallway, therefore an updated grasscloth was installed on those walls. The door hardware throughout the home was replaced with reproductions of the originals, so that they would be new yet give the appearance of being old. Some furniture the client already owned was given a second life by adding slipcovers or getting refinished. Some contemporary pieces were brought in as well, to blend the old style with the modern. A neutral palette was used throughout the house, and color was brought in through bright accessories and artwork. The designer collaborated with Cabinet Concepts to come up with the plan for the kitchen and bathroom cabinets, and met with the client to pick out all of the tiles and solid surfaces. The biggest challenge of this remodel was completing the backyard, as a one hundred year old tree had to be removed in order for the pool to be craned into place. The color of the exterior stone was originally pink, and the appearance was completely transformed by glazing all of the exterior stone. Modern garage doors were put in to complete the design, and the glass was frosted to add privacy. In the end, designer John Warren did a remarkable job of creating the Mid-Century Modern style while staying true to the history of the house.
